Clean Eatz, the Wilmington-based franchise specializing in whole foods in balanced portions, has opened a second Wilmington location at the Harris Teeter shopping center just south of Monkey Junction. The 35-seat restaurant offers the same menu as the flagship location on Racine Drive, but with the addition of a smoothie bar.

Clean Eatz opened its first franchise locations in Charleston and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina earlier this year, and according to co-owner Don Varady, Clean Eatz will open in three more North Carolina cities - Jacksonville, Charlotte and Raleigh - by the end of the year.

Varady and wife Evonne founded Clean Eatz in 2013 with the goal of helping people wanting to transform their eating habits towards a healthier lifestyle.

Customers can choose from a wide variety of meals prepared fresh each day in the café, as well as individually portioned, frozen, grab-and-go options. Customers can also opt to order Clean Eatz’s packaged meal plans. The goal of the packaged meal plans is to provide customers with properly portioned meals with the right balance of protein, carbs and fats. Every low-sodium meal has fewer than 500 calories and 10 grams of fat.

“We see a number of people each day who are looking to modify their diets in order to address specific health concerns,” said Monte Mishoe, general manager of the Monkey Junction location. “A big part of our job is to help educate customers on where to start.”

Mishoe, a former civilian trainer for the Marine Corps, was a customer himself who said he believes so strongly in the company's mission that this was a natural progression for him.

“If I can help teach someone how to live a healthier lifestyle, that’s a positive for me,” Mishoe said.

Clean Eatz is located at 203 Racine Drive and 5920 Carolina Beach Rd, Ste.150. Restaurant hours are Monday – Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
