The sixth annual Feast Down East Regional Conference takes place Friday at University of North Carolina Wilmington's Burney Center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The theme for this year’s conference is Local Food on Everyone’s Plate.

Keynote speaker Samina Raja, a leader in the field of urban and rural planning and development, will discuss the role of planning and policy in building sustainable food systems and healthy communities.

In keeping with Feast Down East’s mission to help support limited-resource farmers, several workshops will focus on farm business skills. Consumers and foodies will find a series of workshops about where and how to buy local foods.

Local food advocates as well as community leaders will participate in workshops about the formation and purpose of local food councils, and local food advocate organizations will set up displays as part of the Community Foods Expo. Each organization will provide information about how its programs and services benefit the regional food system. The expo will also include a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Several area chefs are scheduled to participate in the workshops including Craig Love of Surf House, Jameson Chavez of manna and Dean Neff of PinPoint.
