The Musser family has owned and operated several businesses at 4240 Market St. since the early 1980s. What started as 220 Seafood became the Rusty Pelican and eventually Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill.

Now, John and Erin Musser, along with daughter Brookes and son-in-law Donnie Stone, are collaborating to create Bill’s Front Porch, a full-service brewery and restaurant to be housed in front of Capt’n Bill’s at 4238 Market St.

The building has been used on and off throughout the years, sometimes as a catering or banquet facility by the family and sometimes leased to other businesses. Current renovations include the installation of brewing equipment and custom woodwork throughout the bar and restaurant.

Brookes Musser and sister Kaitlyn Freeman have both been fans of craft beer for some time. A year or so ago they urged their parents to tour some of their favorite Asheville breweries, hoping that they could convince them to get on board with their idea of opening a brewery on the Market Street property. Sure enough, the plan worked.

Plans call for a seven-barrel system where Musser said a full spectrum of craft beers will be brewed. The 150-seat restaurant will include a raw bar, hearty appetizers and items such as Musser’s fried chicken and build-your-own burgers.

“We’re staffing our kitchen with cooks who are interested in creating lots of daily specials based upon what’s available seasonally as well as what pairs well with our beers,” Musser said.

A mid-March opening is expected.
