With a focus on healthy, affordable and sustainable food, Feast Down East and University of North Carolina Wilmington present Food Day Wilmington on the university campus Oct. 23.

Created by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day aims to promote “real food” that is produced with care for the environment, animals, those who grow, harvest and serve it. The theme of Food Day 2015 is "Toward a Greener Diet."

Activities at this year’s celebration include workshops and a sustainable food fair. Workshops will run 9-11:30 a.m. on topics such as healthy eating habits, eating well on a budget and the implications of modern agricultural practices. The fair, which is free of charge and open to the public, runs noon-2 p.m. and features kale-eating competitions, cooking competitions, free vegetable plants and raffles.

In celebration of Food Day, locally-sourced specials will be offered at a number of area restaurants as well as the UNCW campus dining facilities, which are open to the public. Restaurants offering Food Day specials throughout the weekend include Catch, Kornerstone Bistro, Surf House, Tidal Creek Food Co-op, Hops Supply Co., The Basics, Ceviche’s, Circa 1922, 22 North, Flying Pi Kitchen, South Beach Grill, Cam Café, Front Street Brewery, Dig & Dive, Manna, The German Café and Rx Restaurant & Bar.

In conjunction with Food Day, Tidal Creek on Oleander Drive and Lowes Foods on College Road and on Pine Grove Drive are holding food drives this week to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
