Gary Scholar and Taylor Scism are the latest business owners to announce plans for a new brewery in Wilmington. Currently operating under the name S&S Brewing LLC, the owners are working with an intellectual property attorney to change the name to Edward Teach Brewing. Teach was also known as the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who sailed along Cape Fear Coast.
 
Scholar and Scism, both avid homebrewers, plan to have a dozen taps and a 20-barrel system they will use to brew a variety of craft beers including sour and barrel aged beers. There are plans to allocate a few taps to guest breweries from both Wilmington and Asheville. Scholar and Scism also have plans for a homebrewer tap: a tap reserved for local homebrewers who will compete quarterly for the chance to have their recipe brewed and served on site.
 
Food will not be served, but the partners are looking into having a cold deli case on site and hope to host local food trucks as well. Renovations to the property, 604 N. Fourth St., have just begun, and a brewer will be hired after the holidays.
 
The partners have signed a long-term lease for the property, a former firehouse owned by Wilmington Firehouse LLC. John Hinnant with Maus, Warwick, Matthews and Company, represented the landlord in the transaction.
 
"Principals Gary Sholar and Taylor Scism saw the potential of the North Fourth Street location and are excited to bring their concept to life," a release from Maus, Warwick, Matthews and Company stated in announcing the deal. "The diverse culture of the area lends itself to their new venture."
 
A fall 2015 opening is projected.
