Roko Italian Cuisine is offering free gelato to its patrons during the entire month of July.

Customers who make a reservation between 4 to 6 p.m. can enjoy the Italian treat with the purchase of two entrees.

“It is so hot here in Wilmington, especially between 4 to 6 p.m. We want to offer our patrons a way to cool down at Roko Italian Cuisine,” said owner and executive chef Jadranko Peros.

Roko will rotate several flavors throughout the month. The restaurant is currently serving vanilla, coconut and hazelnut biscotti.

“All of these flavors pair well with our chocolate martini,” said marketing and events manager Andrea Peros.

Co-owner Vojka Peros makes nearly all the desserts at Roko but the gelato comes from several  international distributors.

"Gelato is the perfect summer treat," said Peros. "Not only is it cool and refreshing on a hot summer day; it gives you a taste of Italy without leaving the East Coast."

Gelato, the Italian name for ice cream, typically contains less cream than do American ice creams, which by law must have a fat content of at least 10 percent. It often contains fewer egg yolks as well. Gelato also is churned at a much slower pace than ice cream, incorporating less air and resulting in a denser consistency.

"I like gelato because it is more dense and creamy than typical ice cream," Peros said. "And for those of us who have a sweet tooth, yet try to make healthy choices, it's nice to know that gelato often has fewer calories than ice cream."

Roko is located at 6801-105 Parker Farm Drive in Mayfaire Town Center.
