The Jewish culture’s love of food seasons three days of entertainment during this week’s Wilmington Jewish Film Festival.

Thalian Hall hosts the series, which features a different buffet for each show.

“We’re trying to give a full experience, not just the entertainment of the movies,” festival committee member Roselle Margolis said. “We want people to talk, mingle and learn from one another.

“And you don’t have to be Jewish to attend.”

The Other Son, a story of an Israeli and a Palestinian who discover they were accidentally switched at birth, kicks off the festival at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A reception after the movie will feature Jewish desserts including the sweet noodle casserole kugel and rugelach and mandelbrot cookies, Margolis said.

For a Woman, showing at 8 p.m. Saturday, follows a writer’s discovery of her parents’ past, which began in a concentration camp, continued to France and included a mystery. That evening’s dessert reception consists of French pastries such as eclairs and stuffed croissants, Margolis said.

A heavy hors d'oeuvres buffet of Greek food anchors a double feature Sunday.

That day’s 3 p.m. film is Fill the Void, the tale of a girl whose marriage plans are threatened when family tragedy persuades her mother to make arrangements for a union with a different man.

At 7 p.m., Nicky’s Family spotlights “Britain's Schindler”: Sir Nicholas Winton, a stockbroker who organized the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak Jewish children near the start of World War II. Winton did not discuss his efforts for more than 50 years.

The buffet will be served between the two movies.

"Expect baked salmon, vegetarian moussaka, spanakopita and baklava,” Margolis said. The meal is considered a “dairy” meal under Jewish dietary laws, she said.

“All the different ethnic foods we’re having is a common thread because Jewish people come from all over the world,” Margolis said of the festival’s menus, catered by Angie’s of Chris’ restaurant, Margolis said.

Tickets for individual films ($15 and $18), just the Sunday double feature ($36) or the entire series ($66) can be purchased at the Thalian Hall box office, 310 Chestnut St;, by calling the box office at 632-2285 or online at www.thalianhall.org. Discounts are available for all students, Margolis said.
