A pedal-powered party bus has started making rounds in downtown Wilmington.

Trolley Pub, a 14-seat vehicle fueled by riders’ foot action will launch downtown this summer, hopefully by June 1, co-owner Kai Kaapro said.

Kaapro took the curious on free test rides this week to check vehicle operations. When the business formally hits the road, Kaapro and partners will offer assorted tours as they already do in Raleigh, Kaapro said. A pub crawl and narrated tours may be among selections here, he said.

Kaapro described Trolley Pub as a limousine service. Riders may rent the entire vehicle ($350 or $25 per person) or single seats ($30 each). Having at least eight people makes for an easy pedal, Kaapro said. An auxiliary motor aids acceleration uphill and through other difficult spots along the way, he said.

In Raleigh, riders may bring their own cooler full of food and drinks, including beer and wine as long as it’s in a plastic cup, according to the Trolley Pub website. No glass is permitted, and beer and wine must remain on the vehicle. No hard liquor is allowed.

Guests may also use the trolley to bar and restaurant crawl according to their own route or one arranged by Trolley Pub.

A sober Trolley Pub driver is always at the wheel, and Trolley Pub helps riders arrange taxi or other safe rides home after a pedal event, Kaapro said.

Kaapro said he discovered pedal-operated vehicles like Trolley Pub in Amsterdam about five or six years ago. The business started in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., where Kaapro, a California native, attended college.

Operations spread to Arlington, Va. and Raleigh, where he had a friend, Kaapro said. The company is also considering a trolley at Wrightsville Beach, Kaapro said.

Kaapro operates Trolley Pub with partners Jeff Murison, Andrew Cole and Tom Lapham.
