The Oleander Company Inc. has submitted site plans to the city of Wilmington for a new project on property in front of Independence Mall on Oleander Drive.

The former location of a bank, 3512 Oleander Drive next to Panera Bread could now hold a restaurant and another retailer if plans are approved by the city. The former bank building on the site was demolished last year.

Jim Smith, development manager at Oleander Company, said the new 4,200-square-foot building could hold two tenants, with 2,400 square feet for a potential restaurant and a patio for outdoor seating, and another 1,800-square-foot retail space.

"We're in the design process right now," he said.

No tenants have been announced so far. Company officials hope to start construction in October, Smith said.

In 2015, a potential Noodles and Company restaurant had been floated for the former bank building, but the deal didn't come to fruition at the time.

The Oleander Company's plan is expected to be reviewed in a meeting of Wilmington's Technical Review Committee at 11 a.m. Aug. 24.
