Growth is on the horizon for midtown Wilmington's apartment offerings, with more than 280 units in the works. 

Site plans submitted to the city of Wilmington show an apartment project on a 14.5-acre site on George Anderson Drive that would hold 278 apartments in nine buildings and four two-bedroom carriage houses (structures with units above a garage). 

The project also extends Dusty Miller Lane and Breezewood Drive.

The development is a joint venture between Wilmington-based Cameron Management and Childress Klein, one of the largest real estate firms in the Southeastern United States with offices in Charlotte and Atlanta.

Construction on the unnamed project is expected to begin in April 2021, said Hill Rogers, broker in charge of Cameron Management.

Rogers said the complex is set to include two more phases over the next three to five years.

The impetus for adding apartments to a site near the existing Element Barclay complex is sustained occupancy and demand for well designed, amenity-laden and well located apartment communities in Wilmington, he said. The occupancy rate at Element Barclay, which has 405 units, averages about 97%.

"Element Barclay is in a highly desirable location and has been a great project," Rogers said. "We believe in the growth of Wilmington and want to capitalize on the demand."

Correction: The new apartment project on George Anderson Drive is not a phase of Element Barclay and is a separate development. A previous version of this story described the relationship between the complexes incorrectly.
