Former UNCW Basketball Star Brett Blizzard Leaves Hoops For Home Sales

By Cece Nunn, posted Aug 8, 2019
Brett Blizzard, who set numerous scoring records as a basketball player for the University of North Carolina Wilmington Seahawks from 1999 to 2003, is joining Destination Realty Corp., according to an announcement Thursday.

Blizzard, who is announcing his retirement from basketball Friday, will be the first real estate sales representative for Salters Haven, a new Logan Homes community in the early stages of development in Hampstead, a news release from Destination Realty Corp. stated.

Blizzard has played professional basketball in Europe since graduating from UNCW.

"After 16 years, and a couple hundred thousand miles flying back and forth from Europe, he felt the time was right to put down roots in a town he and his family love," the release stated. "He had an offer to continue playing professional basketball for an Italian team this year, but after Blizzard made his decision, he flew to Italy recently and informed the team’s owner that he was ending his playing career."

For a couple years, Blizzard had been talking about making the move to real estate sales with his friend and fellow basketball enthusiast Craig Wheeler, according to the release. Wheeler is the president of Destination Realty Corp. and volunteer head coach at Wilmington’s Coastal Christian High School.

“While it’s bittersweet thinking about not playing professional basketball anymore, my wife and I are really excited making Wilmington our full-time home and taking on this new adventure with Destination Realty Corp.,” said Blizzard in the release.  “After considering all of our options, this was by far the best opportunity for our family and me professionally.”

Blizzard, whose wife, Megan, is from Wilmington, said in the release that Salters Haven "is a dream project and somewhere I'd like to live."

According to the release, Salters Haven is off Factory Road and will offer views of the Intracoastal Waterway. The community will feature more than 300 homesites, a 75-slip marina and a variety of other amenities.

The release stated that Destination Realty Corp. is a full-service real estate sales and marketing company founded by Wheeler in 2016. Wheeler has more than two decades experience managing sales and marketing programs for luxury communities around the country and has been responsible for more than $2 billion in real estate sales during his career.

Sales at Salters Haven are expected to officially kick off in October, the news release stated.
