Community Meeting To Be Held For Townhome Development

By Johanna Cano, posted Aug 28, 2018
A community meeting will be held next week for a conditional use rezoning request for a high-density development planned on property near 5308 Carolina Beach Road.

The meeting will be held at the Best Western Plus hotel at 5600 Carolina Beach Road at 6 p.m. Sept. 4.

The rezoning would be for the construction of a residential townhome development and the property is about 9.14 acres, according to a community meeting notice.

The conditional use rezoning is requested by Carolina Beach LLC on behalf of the property owner, Bennett Commercial Properties.

The location is currently on R-15 and B-2 zoning districts. R-15 is a residential district and B-2 is a highway business district.

The request would seek to change the site’s zoning to R-10, a residential district which has regulations limiting building height to 35 feet and a minimum lot area of 10,000 square feet.

Community meetings are held by the applicant before an official application is submitted to the county.

New townhomes in Wilmington include Southern Gale Townhomes, a townhome section in the RiverLights community, which are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

There are also 19 planned townhomes at Kerr Station Lofts, a redevelopment project.

Another townhome proposal in the area is a 209 multi-family unit, including 26 townhomes, at Arbor Commons, the spot where Lidl grocery-store was previously planned. The rezoning request for the site by Madison Capital Group was denied by the city’s planning commission. The group is appealing the decision to city council.
