KFC Could Be Coming To Market And New Centre

By Cece Nunn, posted Dec 20, 2018
A new Kentucky Fried Chicken could be coming to Market Street and New Centre Drive in Wilmington.

Site plans for a former bank property in the 5100 block of Market Street across from Hooters show a more than 3,300-square-foot KFC replacing the existing bank building.

The proposal was submitted recently to the city of Wilmington but is not a done deal.

“This is currently in the negotiation stage and one of the proposed uses being explored,” said Austin Easter, a broker with Charlotte-based MPV Properties.

MPV Properties bought the nearly 1-acre property at 5120-5122 Market St., previously home to a PNC Bank branch, for $870,000 from PNC, in a deal that closed September in Charlotte.

The property is zoned regional business (RB) and permitted uses include restaurants, fast food, small retail, medical offices and convenience food stores.

The site plans were submitted by Scottish Food Systems Inc., a restaurant management company with corporate offices in Laurinburg, according to the firm's website.

"Currently there are 27 KFCs and 4 Pizza Inns located within North Carolina and South Carolina that are managed by Scottish Food Systems Inc.," the company's website states.

The KFC restaurants that Scottish Food Systems manage include locations in Carolina Beach, Ogden, Leland and Shallotte, according to the website. KFC's site shows at least six KFC locations in the Cape Fear region, including one at 6826 1/2 Market St. in the Ogden area.

Drawn by Paramounte Engineering Inc., the site plans submitted to Wilmington also show 34 parking spaces.

The plans are scheduled to be discussed by the city's Technical Review Committee on Jan. 3, according to the city's project tracking website.
