A pet supply store has opened and new businesses could be on the way to Beau Rivage Marketplace on Carolina Beach Road.

A local franchise of Pet Supplies Plus, which is expected to expand with even more locations in the region in the future, opened about two weeks ago in one of the existing buildings at the Harris Teeter grocery store-anchored shopping center at 5920 Carolina Beach Road.

A national pizza chain, MOD Pizza, is a potential tenant in a 6,075-square-foot multi-tenant structure that is proposed at the center, and an Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers location could be on the way to a site south of the center's entrance, a broker said this week.

Construction could start around October for the multi-tenant building, for which no leases have been signed, but construction equipment currently on the site is for the realignment of a driveway at the center.

Pet Supplies Plus, a 6,500-square-foot store at 5940 Carolina Beach Road, is celebrating its grand opening this weekend, brought to the Wilmington area for the first time by Chris and Brittany Bennett, who are moving to Wilmington from Louisville, Kentucky.

"I think it's a pretty good location. It's south of Wilmington and we sort of pick up all of the traffic from Carolina Beach," Chris Bennett said Thursday of Beau Rivage Marketplace. "And that Harris Teeter in that shopping center does a lot of volume so there's a lot of activity there."

The Bennetts are opening a store in Greenville in August, with plans to add more locations of the pet food and supply store in the Wilmington area.

"Right now, I'm looking north in the Ogden-Porters Neck area," Chris Bennett said, in addition to Leland.

Bryce Morrison of Cape Fear Commercial said the current space at Beau Rivage Marketplace is nearly full, with only a 1,200-square-foot space left and a 2-acre outparcel available. An office for dentist Nathan Graves is also going in to the center in the space formerly occupied by Ultra Tan.

The center is owned by ECHO Realty.

Correction: This version of the story and caption above corrects a statement about MOD Pizza and a potential multi-tenant building at Beau Rivage Marketplace. The pizza chain has not signed a lease in the proposed multi-tenant building at the shopping center.
