Local business owner Jules DeBord plans to expand into an all-local store at Independence Mall early next year.

The owner of pickled vegetable brand Lunchbox Pickles, currently operating at a kiosk in the mall, has leased the space formerly occupied by a Nine West store in the indoor shopping center at 3500 Oleander Drive.

She plans to open the additional location of Port City Farmers Market on Feb. 1. The store, like the kiosk of the same name that DeBord plans to continue renting after the store’s opening, will feature local goods only.

DeBord has been selling Lunchbox Pickles – which in addition to pickles includes pickled okra and other pickled vegetables – at area festivals and farmers markets before opening the kiosk, where shoppers can also find a vareity of local brands in addition to Debord's.

“We were really struggling with, ‘What are we going to do through the winter time?’” DeBord said Thursday about her decision to rent the kiosk, which opened Oct. 1. “I really wanted a better means of getting the product to a larger mass of people.”

The items for sale at the kiosk, located in the Dillard’s wing of the mall between the center court and food court, include The Bearded Heart T-shirts, Don Isidori copper jewelry, Rita’s Wooden Spoon homemade marinara sauce, soap, candles, spices, dog treats and more.

“Filling up this kiosk was easy ... Filling up the store might be a little bit more difficult, but I find so many people want to be in the mall and be in a store that’s all local and 100 percent guaranteed,” DeBord said.

When she opens the storefront market, in 1,400 square feet in the mall’s center court near the main entrance, she said she hopes to add vendors and grow her inventory to include 45 to 50 different local businesses.

Part of the store is expected to be a mini-Gravity Records, with music and merchandise from local bands, DeBord said.

Helen Lewis, the mall's general manager, said in an email Friday, "We are proud to support our community businesses and entrepreneurs. Port City Farmers Market is a great addition to Independence Mall . We look forward to working together, hosting events, embracing local artists and showcasing what Wilmington has to offer and watching Port City Farmers Market grow and expand.”

In addition to operating the kiosk and planning for the new store, Debord said Port City Farmers Market is hosting a Night Farmers Market from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday nights Oct. 18-Nov. 22, at Waterline Brewing Co., 721 Surry St. in downtown Wilmington. The night market will also feature all-local vendors.
