A convenience store and gas station under construction in a busy Wilmington corridor will include an unusual feature.

Cecil Worsley III, president and CEO of Springer Eubank Co., said this week that the new Phoenix Mart in the works at the corner of South 17th Street and Glen Meade Road will include a a pub-like section.

Worsley explained that the new concept will be akin to a tap room with eight craft beers from all over the country and outside patio seating.

Expected to open at the beginning of October, the store will also include a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop.

Cameron Management, an investment company that focuses on real estate development, brokerage and property management, announced the signing of the lease for the new convenience store with Springer Eubank Co. this week. The financial details were not disclosed.

Locally owned and operated for more than 100 years, Springer Eubank is a diversified petroleum products company that specializes in commercial fuel sales and has eight retail convenience stores under the Phoenix Mart name in the Carolinas.

The Phoenix Mart at South 17th Street and Glen Meade Road is replacing a 10,000-square-foot unused portion of the adjacent strip center that was demolished before the store's construction began.

“We are thrilled to have this new development on such a prominent corner . . . This is another incremental and important step in the continuing redevelopment of the 17th Street corridor,” said Hill Rogers, broker in charge at Cameron Management.

Worsley said the location worked well for a Phoenix Mart in general because of its proximity to businesses, medical offices, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, housing and other development. It's across from a coffee shop location of another company Worsley leads, Port City Java, of which Worsley is the chairman.

But the spot also lent itself to introducing the tap room component.

“It was a ground-up location so you had the flexibility to do some different things,” Worsley said.

Rogers said the land is owned by Canterbury Center LLC, and the general contractor for the convenience store is Bunn & Brantley. The store was designed by John Rees of Rees Architecture.
