Movie Theater, Restaurant Proposals For Midtown Move Forward

By Cece Nunn, posted Jun 12, 2015
Some of the commercial pieces of the mixed-use Barclay development, including a 14-screen movie theater in midtown Wilmington, are coming closer to opening night.

Paramounte Engineering submitted site plans to the city this week that include the theater and restaurant spaces for a total of 72,700 square feet. Phase 1 of the project is a more than 25-acre portion of a 34.98-acre tract, according to a city Technical Review Committee agenda.

The TRC is expected to review the plans at a meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. June 25, the agenda says.

Stone Theatres is building the 55,000-square-foot cinema near Independence Boulevard and South 17th Street in the Barclay commercial area. The commercial part of the Barclay project is a joint venture between Cameron Properties Land Co. of Wilmington and Collett, a commercial real estate firm in Charlotte.

“I think the movie theater’s going to be a home run,” said Hill Rogers, broker-in-charge for Cameron Management Inc., adding that the restaurants are expected to help drive business to the movie theater and vice versa.

Once the theater and restaurant buildings are finished, more businesses - along the lines of a grocery store, mobile phone stores, hair salons, a wine shop and additional restaurants, for examples - are expected to follow, he said.

The site plans include green space in front of the theater and between the two restaurant buildings, along with the outlines of 12 more building pads.
