New Brewery To Open In Historic Firehouse Building

By Cece Nunn, posted Dec 4, 2014
Work is expected to begin soon on a new brewery in a historic building on North 4th Street in the Brooklyn Arts District, according to a news release.

S&S Brewery LLC signed a long-term lease for 604 N. 4th St., a former firehouse owned by Wilmington Firehouse LLC, the announcement from Maus, Warwick, Matthews and Co. said. Designed by prominent architect Henry L. Bonitz, the firehouse opened at the end of 1907.

John Hinnant, a broker with Maus, Warwick, Matthews and Co., represented the landlord in the lease.

S&S Brewing is working with an intellectual property attorney to finalize the name, brand and concept for its new brewery.

"Principals Gary Sholar and Taylor Scism saw the potential of the North 4th Street location and are excited to bring their concept to life," the release stated. "The diverse culture of the area lends itself to their new venture."

Vacant for the past year, the building was last used as a firehouse in 1965. In the past it has served as a boxing gym, home to the Wilmington-New Hanover County gang task force and, most recently, to special effects film company Legion Films.

Check back later for more details on the announcement.
