Wilmington’s homegrown coffee company is set to expand along Oleander Drive, according to the company’s CEO.

Steven Schnitzler said Tuesday that his firm would soon close its coffee shop at 5917 Oleander Drive in the Arboretum Plaza shopping center and take over the former Dunkin’ Donuts location at 5709 Oleander Drive.

Dunkin’ Donuts recently moved into a new retail store at 4511 Oleander Drive in the Village at College and Oleander development near the intersection of Oleander Drive and South College Road.

Officials are hoping to open its expanded Oleander Drive operation by May.

“That’s ambitious,” Schnitzler said of the store's opening timeline. “If we open by Memorial Day, I will be thrilled.”

Schnitzler said the existing site is currently “being gutted” to accommodate the new coffee house and the company’s bake shop, which is currently operating out of its corporate headquarters on River Road.

“It’s going to gives us a chance to increase our efficiency,” Schnitzler said of the firm’s bake shop operation moving to its future Oleander Drive location. “We’ve added more packing capability, and our roasters our going gangbusters at our River Road facility … We’re going to need more square footage [at our River Road location] for our increased packaging and roasting operations.”

Schnitzler said the future Oleander Drive location will incorporate large dining space, a bigger drive-thru with greater ingress and egress to Oleander Drive and new equipment. He added all the staff from the company's Arboretum Plaza location will be transferred to the new coffee shop.

“It’s more than double the size of our existing location. We’re adding larger windows, we took out all awnings and cut out the plumbing,” Schnitzler said. “It will not be recognizable when we complete the upfit.”
