At Mayfaire, Costume Store Opens Seasonal Location

By Cece Nunn, posted Sep 15, 2015
For a temporary tenant at Mayfaire Town Center, it's time to help more people play dress up.

Halloween & More, a costume and accessory business with retail locations in Wilmington and elsewhere, opened its doors this week in nearly 4,000 square feet at 6849 Main St., temporarily leasing the space vacated by women's clothing store Coldwater Creek about a year ago.

The Halloween & More year-round location at 420 S. College Road offers costumes and accessories for numerous holidays, including Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, and Easter, according to the store's website. The store's Mayfaire location was still hiring as of Tuesday afternoon.

According to its website, the store formerly called Halloween Express has been serving North Carolina since 1994. A seasonal Halloween & More storefront opened in Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem in August, according to the store's Facebook page.

Since Coldwater Creek closed its Wilmington store, along with Coldwater Creek stores across the U.S. because of the company's 2014 bankruptcy, the space at Mayfaire Town Center has been used for a number of seasonal purposes, including a gift-wrapping station and Toys for Tots collection site.

In June, Tennessee-based CBL & Associates Properties bought the town center and neighboring Mayfaire Community Center for $192 million. "The permanent leasing staff at CBL’s corporate office is working on a permanent tenant for that space," said Sue Rice, Mayfaire Town Center general manager, referring to the future for 6849 Main St.

In recent weeks, two businesses have announced plans to close locations at Mayfaire Town Center. TrySports, an athletic apparel and accessory store at 925 Town Center Drive, began holding a store closing sale last month, and Towne Tap & Grill, a restaurant at 890 Town Center Drive, announced Aug. 17 in a Facebook message that it had shut its doors.

Romano’s Macaroni Grill at 1035 International Drive in the town center closed in January and appeared to be vacant as of Tuesday morning.

Paige Somervell, marketing director for Mayfaire Town Center, said as a policy, the center does not disclose information about leasing, but in general the CBL leasing team is "hard at work pursuing opportunities to fill our empty spaces as soon as possible."
