Port City Java To Renovate Fifth Location

By J. Elias O'Neal, posted May 2, 2013

Port City Java will close its Lumina Station coffee shop next week for renovations.

Steve Schnitzler, CEO of Wilmington-based Port City Java, said Thursday the store at 1900 Eastwood Road, Suite 34, will close Monday, May 6 and should reopen by Wednesday, May 8.

“We’ve gotten pretty good at these remodels,” Schnitzler said. “So our goal is to have the location open by Wednesday.”

Plans call for the Lumina Station coffee shop to receive a new interior paint job, accompanied by more mirrors. The site will also include more bench seating and an updated condiment bar and new bakery case.

During the past several months, Port City Java has renovated a number of its Wilmington locations, including its store at Barclay Commons -- a mixed-use commercial development at the intersection of Shipyard and Independence boulevards -- and its store on South Front Street in downtown Wilmington.

Other noticeable renovations have occurred at Port City Java’s 17th Street location near New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Porters Neck store on Market Street, which was recently expanded to accommodate its growing client base.

Schnitzler said officials also have plans to renovate its 5917 Oleander Drive location and its café in the Harris Teeter at 820 S. College Road.

Meanwhile, officials continue to make upgrades to the company's headquarters at 101 Port Watch Way in Wilmington.

Construction crews are wrapping up work on the firm’s new, 350-square-foot cupping lab, which will allow coffee officials to test and evaluate coffee, Schnitzler said.

“We plan to host small tours once it’s completed,” he said. “We’ll put up a white board and projection screen where we’ll talk about the origin of our coffee beans and how they are chosen and processed.”
