Wilmington residents will be able to view one of the greenest homes in America during the Solar and Green Building Tour this Saturday, Sept. 25. The renovated home, 3404 Talon Court, recently received the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum certification.
The LEED certification process is a point-based system. TA building can receive points for categories such as water conservation, air quality, recycled content and storm water management.
“This site alone is worth the price of admission,” said Joy Allen, executive director of the Cape Fear Green Building Alliance (CFGBA), the non-profit group that sponsors the annual tour.
The house at 3404 Talon Court has many energy efficient features, including a green roof and solar panels. The home also has a rain garden that recycles rainwater. The water can then be used for irrigation and flushing the toilet. The home has won national media attention and has been included in publications such as “USA Today,” “EcoHome” and “Green Source.”
The tour includes six other sites. Snipes Academy of Arts and Design begins the tour, which starts at 10 a.m. Participants have the choice of driving to the other sites in their cars or riding the trolley provided by the tour. After a tour of Snipes Academy and opening remarks by Mayor Bill Saffo, the trolley will leave at 10:45 a.m. for the other sites.
Other sites in the tour include: the offices of Monteith Construction Co., a LEED Gold commercial renovation in historic downtown Wilmington; Midori on 29th, a N.C. Healthy Built Homes Certified Development that is under construction; Sapona Green Building Center, a retail store offering green building materials; Buffalo Wild Wings on Old Eastwood Road, the first restaurant in Wilmington to implement solar hot water; and 5707 Wrightsville Ave., a new LEED Silver single family residence.
This is the sixth annual Solar and Green Building Tour. Allen said the group expects at least 100 participants this year.
Tickets for the tour can be purchased at www.cfgba.org. The cost is $15 per person and $12 for CFGBA members.
