Promised Land Kitchen To Fill Vacant Wayfarer Space Downtown

Jules DeBord is fast becoming a major player in the local food scene and is about to launch yet another new restaurant in coming days called Promised Land Kitchen, at 110 S. Front St. in downtown Wilmington.

DeBord already operates Lunchbox Pickles, the Port City Farmer’s Market Kitchen To Go in the food court at Independence Mall, a Port City Farmer's Market store at the mall and Ramen A-Go-Go food truck.

“I get bored really easily,” DeBord said. “I definitely like to stay busy.”

And busy she is likely to be, with several local operations as well as a hand in the Port City Farmer’s Market at Waterline Brewery.

DeBord said Promised Land Kitchen will feature home-cooked meals from out of the way places -- global street food meets comfort food, so to speak. She will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as late-night bites on weekends.

“I’m looking to fill what I see as several niches in the downtown market,” DeBord said.

Promised Land is located in the building that until just a few weeks ago housed the Wayfarer Delicatessen & Bistro. Messages left for the owners of the Wayfarer in regards to the closure were not returned.

For breakfast, Promised Land will carry a variety of quick-service sandwiches and plates, and have grab-and-go items for both breakfast and lunch. There will be fresh salads available by the pound as well as three homemade soups daily. There will also be a rotating selection of daily specials, allowing DeBord and her staff will experiment with new recipes and see how customers respond.

DeBord said it is also part of her mission to introduce customers to global flavors and ingredients and educate them on new cuts of meat and styles of preparation that they might not be familiar with. She envisions it as a sort of foodie mecca where the adventurous will flock to see what’s on the menu that day and challenge their palates with something new.

Customers can expect a variety of globally inspired tacos as well as ramen, pho, burgers and sandwiches.

Promised Land Kitchen will offer counter service with table delivery and both indoor and outdoor seating. DeBord plans to partner with Port City Bike Taxi to offer delivery throughout downtown.

Hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
