A company headquartered in Wilmington has agreed to buy a segment of a Georgia competitor, the local firm’s president said Friday.

Atlantic Corp., which does business as Atlantic Packaging, plans to purchase the materials, supply and servicing portion of Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems (CIMS) of Dalton, Georgia, for an undisclosed amount, said Rusty Carter, president of Atlantic Corp. 

Started in 1946, Atlantic provides packaging products and equipment to consumer product manufacturers across North America, with headquarters and local operations at 806 N. 23rd St. in Wilmington. CIMS, a packaging equipment manufacturer and films supplier to the carpet and carpet yarn industry, will remain in the equipment manufacturing business.

“CIMS has pretty much dominated that market segment for probably the last 20 years," said Carter, referring to the supply side of its carpet business. "They’re very innovative in their approach ... Atlantic on the other hand has had a location in the Atlanta market for 15 years or more, and our focus was a little broader and serviced more manufacturing segments. We frankly had a difficult time carving out any position in the carpet industry because CIMS was so good at what they did.”

The purchase agreement "gave us an opportunity to have a greater market share in the Atlanta region and also a market presence in the carpet industry," he said.

Atlantic plans to move materials inventory and distribution from Dalton to the Atlantic’s existing Atlanta branch next year while maintaining a sales and technical service office in Dalton, according to a news release.

A privately held company, Atlantic employs nearly 1,000 people in 19 branch locations across the U.S., the Dominican Republic and Central America. The Dalton facility will become the company’s 20th location, Carter said.

The purchase will also add 10 new employees in sales, administration and distribution along with six contract technicians to Atlantic's employee roster, he said.
