Government Entities, Schools To Close For Monday MLK Holiday

By Jenny Callison, posted Jan 16, 2015
Federal, state and local government offices will close Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Most banks will also be closed.

County closings include public libraries. In New Hanover County, all library branches will be closed Sunday and Monday, county officials announced in a news release.

Public schools in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties will close for the holiday as well.

The City of Wilmington offices will likewise be closed, but trash collection will proceed on a normal schedule, according to a release from spokeswoman Malissa Talbert.

To prepare for the annual MLK parade Monday, the city will close southbound Third Street at the intersections of Front, Davis, Brunswick and Hanover streets for bleacher placement and parade lineup, the release stated. Third Street will close to northbound traffic at Market Street at 10 a.m., and all streets crossing the parade route, which runs from Brunswick Street south to Princess Street along Third and Fourth streets, will also close at 10 a.m.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. and ends at about 2 p.m., the release stated.
