House Speaker Paul Ryan is scheduled to make a trip to Wilmington next week for a private event. Ryan is slated to attend a breakfast on June 5 at Live Oak Bank, according to officials with the company. U.S. Rep. David Rouzer is also scheduled to host the breakfast.
The speaker's campaign operation, Team Ryan, did not release more details of the event, saying it was "private."
According to an invitation letter “From the Desk of Chip Mahan,” who is Live Oak’s CEO, levels of participation include Roundtable Chairman at $25,000 per couple, Roundtable Host at $10,000 per couple, Breakfast Sponsor at $5,000 per couple and Breakfast Attendee at $1,000 per person. The first two levels include a VIP roundtable before the breakfast.
The letter states the contributions go to Team Ryan, a joint fundraising committee between Prosperity Action Inc. and the National Republican Congressional Committee.
The Host Committee listed on the letter includes Mahan, Bill Cameron, Scott Custer, David Lucht, Milt Petty, Jerald Pullins, Neil Underwood and Lee Williams. All the committee members are Live Oak executives or members of the bank’s board of directors.
According to a Speaker Ryan political aide, Ryan will be in Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem to "raise resources for House Republicans and help the party ahead of the midterms."
"It is always a great honor to have the Speaker of the House come to town, and we are so pleased to have him in Wilmington. It is great exposure for the area and exemplifies the significance of our citizens and the local business community here. We look forward to having a very successful event," Rouzer said in an email.
Dawn Thompson, senior government relations manager at Live Oak Bank, said Thursday, “We just think it's a great opportunity for the bank and for Wilmington to be on the map."
While Live Oak Bank is hosting the event, Thompson noted that the company has not given any money to Team Ryan.
Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, announced in April that is not seeking re-election. He was elected Speaker of the House in October 2015.
“We're really excited that the Speaker of the House wants to come to Wilmington and see the area. And specifically, that he will be at Live Oak … our bank is a little different than other banks and we touch the federal government in so many different spots. So for us we just think it's a great opportunity to show the speaker, and Congressman Rouzer ... exactly what we are doing,” Thompson said.
Thompson said that a discussion is set to take place at the breakfast, "and the discussion will focus around Wilmington, Wilmington growth in the financial world, the tech world, obviously with the nCino tie-in and our new company Apiture. And just the job growth in the area, the economic improvement; I think those are the topics, generally, that we're interested in highlighting for the speaker."
Thompson said that in the past, Ryan has gone to Charlotte and Raleigh; however, “I think it's the first time that, at least I know of, that he's been to the Wilmington area."
