Although it begins with a holiday, the week of May 25 is shaping up to be a busy one for Wilmington’s business community.

May 28 is especially packed, with a seminar on websites, a roundtable event on clean energy and two programs for entrepreneurs, one organized by Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the other organized by the CIE's former director, Jim Roberts. Both programs are scheduled to feature an appearance by state treasurer Janet Cowell to talk about state funding for innovators.

Two of those events take place at Ironclad Brewery at overlapping times, but the functions will convene in different parts of the brewery.

Here’s the event rundown:

MONDAY (Memorial Day)

• City of Wilmington offices are closed, although city trash, recycling and yard waste collection will proceed on a normal schedule. Wave Transit will not provide service on the holiday. The city’s three swimming pools, however, will be open on Monday.
• New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender county offices are closed. NHC public library branches are closed Sunday and Monday. State and federal offices are closed, along with state and federal courts, and there is no mail delivery.
• Local public schools are closed for the day, as are Brunswick Community College, Cape Fear Community College and University of North Carolina Wilmington.
• Banks and the country’s financial markets are also closed.

WEDNESDAY

• The town of Leland holds a meet-and-greet event to introduce Gary Vidmar, its new economic and community development director. The lunch event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Greens Way. RSVPs for the free event are requested by Friday.
• The N.C. State Ports Authority Board of Directors meets at 1 p.m. in the board room of the N.C. Maritime Building, 2202 Burnett Blvd. in Wilmington.
• The Tourism Development Authority board holds its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Seagrass Room of Homewood Suites by Hilton, 6732 Swan Mill Road.

THURSDAY

• “Coastal Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: It’s not a jungle out there” is a program highlighting local resources for entrepreneurs, plus also an opportunity to hear from Cowell. The program and reception, hosted by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, takes place 4-7 p.m. at CIE, 803 S. College Road. Representatives from the CIE as well as other startup resources will be present. Click to register.
• A crowdfunding seminar organized by Roberts features Mark Easley Sr., startup advisor and crowdfunding advocate. Other crowdfunding advocates at the session include Bill Warner, founder of Entredot.org and Sean Steigerwald and Jon Spinney, founders of Malartu Funds, the first crowdfunding platform in the state. State treasurer Janet Cowell will talk about the N.C. Innovation Fund. The free program takes place 4-6 p.m. at Ironclad Brewery, 115 N. Second St. Registration is required.
• The Making Energy NetWork Roundtable returns with a discussion titled “Clean Energy Snapshot: activity and opportunity in southeastern North Carolina and statewide.” The program, sponsored by the N.C. Biotechnology Center Southeastern Office and Cavanaugh & Associates, also takes place at Ironclad Brewery. Registration and networking begin at 5:30 p.m., with the program itself taking place 6-7 p.m. 

FRIDAY

• ParkSterling Bank and Live Oak Bank sponsor a free document shredding event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the ParkSterling parking lot, 3701 Shipyard Blvd. Food trucks will be on site as well.  

SATURDAY

• The Wilmington office of Morgan Stanley hosts its annual Shredding Day from 9 a.m. to noon at the firm’s offices, 1111 Military Cutoff Road. People bringing documents to shred are also invited to bring nonperishable food items to help the Salvation Army with its outreach efforts. Food collection (but not shredding) continues through May 30 in the Morgan Stanley office lobby.
