Week Events: State Of The City, Bank Opening And More

Monday:
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo gives the annual State of the City address at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. Third St. The speech also will be shown live on GTV, Channel 8 on TimeWarner, as well as streamed live online at wilmingtonnc.gov.

Tuesday:
Wilmington city officials holds a meeting with downtown stakeholders to discuss the MLK parade that took place Jan. 21. Small-group discussions are planned on issues such as the parade’s route, local business access, parking access and notification to merchants as the city looks to plan for the event next year. This year, the parade route was moved to downtown from Castle Street. The debriefing meeting will be 6-7:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 N. Third St.

Thursday:
Park Sterling Bank holds a grand opening 6-8 p.m. for its new location at 3701 Shipyard Blvd. The bank, which relocated in early December from its former location on Eastwood Road, made substantial renovations to the building, which had been a branch of now-defunct Cooperative Bank.

Thursday-Friday:
University of North Carolina Wilmington hosts events focusing on product marketing issues facing girls. Teachers and parents of middle school girls are invited to the campus for the events.

On Thursday, there will be a screening at 7 p.m. at the Lumina Theater of the documentary It’s a Girl Thing: Tween Queens and the Commodification of Girlhood and a panel discussion featuring UNCW faculty from the departments of English, film studies and sociology and criminology.

On Friday, there will be a lecture and question-and-answer session at 3 p.m. at Lumina Theater featuring Sharon Lamb, author of “Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers’ Schemes.”
