The Cape Fear Economic Development Council (CFEDC) this week will discuss potential economic development impacts of Titan America’s cement plant planned for Castle Hayne.
The group will hold a presentation about the issue 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27. The event will be at the WHQR Gallery, 254 N. Front St., Suite 300.
Craig Galbraith, a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington Cameron School of Business, is slated to discuss “The Impact of Cement Manufacturing on Economic Growth in the Cape Fear Region,” a recent study commissioned by the N.C. Coastal Federation. A question-and-answer period also is scheduled.
According to organizers, the study is a comprehensive economic analysis of the project.
“No economic impact studies were commissioned by New Hanover County or the state of North Carolina, even though taxpayer incentives were offered to the company to encourage development of the plant,” stated a release about the event.
“This issue has been described as a clash of the old and new economies in our region, and regardless of what happens in this case, it is important for the public to understand how we arrived at this point, and how we can avoid similar ill-considered economic development decisions in the future,” Lloyd Smith, CFEDC’s secretary, said in a statement.
