Domestic Violence In Workplace Is Focus Of Summit

By Jenny Callison, posted Sep 23, 2011

This year’s Civil Workplace Summit takes place Monday and Tuesday, September 26 and 27, with two free public events spotlighting domestic violence in the workplace. It is the fourth such event in Wilmington.

Organizers say that a September 19 incident in which an estranged husband shot his wife and himself at a Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Kannapolis underscores how domestic violence can spill over into the workplace.

The summit begins with a screening of “Telling Amy’s Story” at 7 p.m. Monday at Lumina Theater. The film documents a domestic violence homicide in Pennsylvania in 2001, and is narrated by the detective who led the case review. It highlights the many ways in which those around the victim, including her employer, could have gotten involved or sought help for her.

Following the film will be a panel discussion with human resources professionals, detectives from the Wilmington-New Hanover County domestic violence unit, and an assistant district attorney. The film and discussion will be rebroadcast throughout October on NHC TV.

Tuesday morning’s program consists of presentations on how employers can develop domestic violence workplace policies and why they are needed. Presenters include:

•    Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Connie Majure Rhett
•    Attorney Jim Morgan with Legal Aide North Carolina
•    Verizon Wireless human resource managers Robert Clayton and Olga Mendez
•    Johnny Lee, executive director of Peace at Work

This discussion takes place from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive in Wilmington. Human resource professionals can obtain three continuing education units by attending. While the event is open to the public, registration is strongly encouraged.
