UNCW Catches Record Haul

By Trevor Paxton, posted Feb 18, 2011

Today, the University of North Carolina Wilmington received the largest gift in its history. Though the amount is undisclosed, the record donation will primarily benefit the School of Nursing.

“I cannot wait to see what these funds will do for UNCW,” said University Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo.

The nursing building will now be named McNeill Hall after the family that made the donation. Though the McNeills chose to keep the amount confidential, a previous high for a family endowment was $3 million from Herbert and Sylvia Fisher.

The donation was the latest installment to The Campaign for UNCW: Soaring to Greatness. The campaign’s goal is to raise $65 million by the end of 2012, of which $57.7 million has already been obtained.

“We still have some things to do. Scholarships are the primary focus,” said Bob Warwick, the former trustee who now co-chairs the campaign.

The university also announced the donation of $250,000 to the athletic department. The money comes from George and Sylvia Rountree, for whom the basketball office suite will be named.

“These two significant gifts will have a tremendous impact on the development of our campus,” DePaolo said.

Deborah and Sandy McNeill and Cyndi and Ronnie McNeill donated the money that will mostly benefit the nursing school. Sandy McNeill, a former chair of the UNCW board of trustees and brother Ronnie, who previously served on the Cameron Executive Advisory Board, co-own and direct Liberty Healthcare Services. A portion of the funds will also be used towards finance education in the Cameron School of Business.
