Southern Sign Co. Designs Graphics For Super Bowl

Wilmington-based Southern Sign Co. is designing some of the graphics being displayed by the NFL Network at Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday.
 
Located in Monkey Junction, Southern Sign Co. has designed graphics in the area for the past 11 years. For this project, the firm has been working on fabricating, laminating and installing graphics for the media stages of the NFL Network since the beginning of January, company officials said Friday.
 
Southern Sign Co., 5649 Carolina Beach Road, previously assisted in designs for the NFL Network but never for a game or audience of this magnitude, co-owner Andrea Wilson said.
 
“We are excited because this is something that most people around the world are familiar with,” Wilson said. “You look around and you say, ‘Wow, someone made that’. We’ve got graphics everywhere, and we are just happy to be a part of it.”
 
The opportunity came about after the company completed a boat lettering job for a past client, Wilson said. The man asked if the firm could install boat lettering in 3-D stainless steel pieces, and Southern Sign Co. completed the job. The client worked for Rocky Point-based Filmwerks International, kicking off a business relationship with Southern Sign Co. that resulted in several projects. Through the relationship, the company is making its Super Bowl graphics debut on Sunday.
 
The project consists of providing graphic design for the wrapping around portable stages, tractor-trailer graphics and lighted sponsor boards. Several of the pieces will be assembled on site the day of the game.
 
The work took “a lot of understanding and gathering of materials and a lot of overtime,” Wilson said. The company made most pieces in-house and others through its second facility.
 
“It was about time management and making sure we were flexible enough to complete the order,” Wilson said.
 
She declined to comment about the deal’s price tag.
 
“We’re not getting rich off this. It’s another job, and we pay the same amount of attention to this one that we do to any others out of our doors,” Wilson said. “We aim to make sure our clients are happy and hope in the end we further that relationship.”
