Latin Cuisine Gives Way To Indian In Historic Downtown Building

Delphina Dos, 5 S. Water St., has closed, according to an Oct. 18 announcement from Terry Espy, president of commercial real estate brokerage and development firm Momentum group.

“We are proud to have represented the property owner, Harper Peterson, who through his efforts over a 25-year period, ensured the vitality and ongoing presence of this historic property,” Espy said in a news release.

Peterson, a former Wilmington mayor and owner of Delphina on Bald Head Island, has owned the historic Quince Building for the past 25 years. He spent 21 years operating Water Street Restaurant before closing it down in order to focus his efforts on Delphina. He became a minor partner in Mixto, which operated for nearly three years, until Peterson opened Delphina Dos in the same space in January.

Espy said that Peterson wants to continue to focus his efforts on expanding Delphina and feels that now is the time to turn over the 5 S. Water St. space.

The new tenants, Mona Kaur, Gurdeep Singh and Amarjit Singh, have been in the local restaurant scene since 1995, opening Wilmington Indian restaurant, India Mahal, Espy said in the release. They will lease the building with the option to purchase. With the recent sale of India Mahal, their focus has been to expand into the downtown Wilmington area.

The new restaurant, Kabob and Grill, will focus on the "exotic flavors" of India as well as upscale presentations of Indian delicacies in both a modern and traditional atmosphere, Espy said in the release. It will offer a lunch buffet of Indian curries, a lunch menu of various kabobs, an extensive dinner menu, a chef’s special menu and a full service bar. The restaurant will also specialize in catering corporate meetings, private parties and weddings. Owners plan to open the doors in mid-December.

“The new tenant, Kabob and Grill, will be a great addition to the downtown Wilmington market,” Espy said in the release.
