Do I Need A Ductless Split System?

Sponsored Content provided by Jimmy Williams - Owner, O’Brien Service Company

Keeping your home cool during the summer months and warm during the winter months is essential for staying comfortable, and having a ductless split system can help you achieve that. Many people have questions when they hear the term “ductless split system.” Is this system right for me? What is a ductless split system? How does this system vary from other cooling and heating systems? Well, let us put your mind at ease by explaining what ductless split systems are and how they work.

A ductless split system is a heating and cooling system that has two parts – an indoor unit that is either installed in the ceiling or mounted to the wall, and an outdoor unit. The factor that separates it from other systems is that it does not use a duct system; instead, it only needs a few cables to run refrigerant through. The installation process for a ductless system is much easier than for a central system when duct work doesn’t exist.

When to use a ductless system? If your current home doesn’t have any duct work, installing a ductless split system would make sense. You can choose a mini split system which has one outdoor unit and one indoor unit, and will heat and cool one room. Or you can use a multi split system which will have one outdoor unit and up to five indoor units to cool and heat multiple rooms. Another reason to choose a ductless split system is if you’re adding onto your home. Instead of adding duct work to your current system, you can just have a mini split system installed into the additional room.

What are the benefits of a ductless system? The first is that when doing an installation, in most cases it is much cheaper to install a ductless system than to have a central heating and air system installed. The second reason is that it’s a zoning system. That means that the indoor units are in separate rooms, allowing you to set desired temperatures for different parts of your home. Finally, because there are fewer components working in these systems than central systems, in most cases the operational cost is less, the system requires less maintenance, and any repair costs are lower.
