Health Care Heroes announced
October 22, 2013By Cam Ellis
The names of 30 health care providers, experts and volunteers in the Wilmington area who will receive 2013 Health Care Heroes awards were announced Tuesday.
Those expecting to be honored come from a variety of positions in the health care community, and the awards given out will include honors for community achievement as well as community outreach and innovation in health care, according to a news release.
This is the first year for the Health Care Heroes event, which is organized by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal.
“We had been looking at doing this for some time,” Greater Wilmington Business Journal publisher Rob Kaiser said, “and once we got Well Care to be a founding sponsor, we were finally able to.”
There also will be awards given for exemplary service among health care executives, physicians, nurses, health care professionals, first responders and volunteers. The goal of the event is to bring those who work in the local health care market together, Kaiser said.
“A lot of times, people in the medical field don’t get to interact much,” he said. "We feel this awards ceremony will help bring those people together and give them an opportunity to let their hair down, as well as recognize those who are receiving awards and raise money for scholarships.”
According to Tuesday’s announcement, the 2013 Health Care Heroes winners for the Lifetime Achievement category are:
• Charles Hardy, professor and founding dean, UNCW College of Health and Human
• Jim Jones, retired physician
• Joseph Pino, pediatrician and CEO, SEAHEC
The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at Cape Fear Community College’s new Union Station building at the corner of Front and Red Cross streets.
More than 500 people are expected to attend the event highlighting members of the Wilmington health community. The night also will serve to award scholarships to “up-and-coming members of the health care community,” the release stated.
