The University of North Carolina at Wilmington elected three new members to its board of trustees for the 2012-13 academic year. The new members include the first African-American woman to serve as chairwoman in the university’s history.

The new appointees are: Linda A. Pearce, chairwoman; Wendy F. Murphy, vice-chairwoman; and Britt A. Preyer, secretary.

Pearce, an alumna of North Carolina Central University, is serving her second term on the board of trustees. She is currently CEO of Elderhaus Inc. and founded a scholarship at UNCW with the help of the Williston High School Alumni Association.

Murphy graduated from UNCW in 1993 with a degree in elementary education and is the former trustees chairwoman.

Preyer, a graduate of Davidson College, is also serving a second term. He started the Preyer Family Scholarship to benefit students who major in marine biology. He is a financial advisor with Raymond James Financial Services.
