Film and theater actress Anna Deavere Smith will perform at UNCW on Wednesday, September 14. She will perform passages from her latest book entitled “Letters to a Young Artist: Straight-Up Advice on Making a Life in the Arts.”

The performance will be held at Kenan Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $9 and are free for students, faculty and staff.

Smith has held roles in the films “Philadelphia” and “The American President” and has recurring roles on television shows such as “The Practice” and “The West Wing.”

But, she has won an Obie Award, Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominations and a MacArther “genius grant” for her documentary-style theater work. The New York Times has hailed her as “the ultimate impressionist, she does people’s souls.” In a one-woman show, she interrogates the human condition through a journalistic style blended with mimicry.

In her first appearance at UNCW, Smith will perform “Snapshots:  Glimpses of America in Change,” which will also include excerpts from some of her most well-known pieces.

For tickets, call Kenan Box Office at (910) 962-3500 or purchase online at www.etix.com. Box office hours are Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.
