DermOne Dermatology Brand Exiting Local Market

A dermatology practice group that entered the local market in 2012 with the acquisition of a Port City physician's office is no longer providing services at Wilmington-area offices as of Friday, according to a notice to patients on the company's website.

The DermOne of North Carolina offices that will not be offering DermOne services after this week in Wilmington are at 1099 Medical Center Drive and behind Mayfaire Community Center at 6752 Rock Spring Road, although vein care services are still available at the Mayfaire location, according to the notice. The other offices impacted in the area and nearby are in Burgaw, Southport, Clinton and Jacksonville.

DermOne acquired Atlantic Dermatology, the Wilmington practice founded by dermatologist Jonathan Crane, at 1099 Medical Center Drive, in 2012.

The Medical Center Drive office was DermOne's primary dermatology office in North Carolina, officials said in 2014. That same year, the company had partnered with Wilmington physician Kamran Goudarzi, a provider of scarless vein treatment, occupying the second floor of The Offices at Mayfaire III, the location of Goudarzi's DermOne & Scarless VeinCare practice. DermOne in 2014 had also partnered with local physician Deidra Blanks, a provider of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The recent DermOne patient notice does not say why the group's services are no longer offered at the local offices and what the change means for the practices' operations continuing without the DermOne name.

Messages to DermOne of North Carolina representatives were not returned Wednesday morning.

Efforts to reach Crane on Wednesday also were not immediately successful. Crane Dermatology is listed among the alternatives for patients of DermOne in the patient notice, but no one answered the phone number provided Wednesday morning.

According to the notice, medical records of patients are available online until March 9 and after that will be transferred to Crane Dermatology Associates.

A 2013 news release on the acquisition of Atlantic Dermatology stated that Crane was continuing to lead the practice in Wilmington but also joined the DermOne leadership team to head up the DermOne expansion in North Carolina.

"It's always been my goal to use what we've developed at Atlantic Dermatology as a launching pad to provide services beyond Wilmington. When I met the DermOne team, I realized that I could do just that in partnership with like-minded professionals who are interested in changing the way dermatology services are provided," Crane said in the 2013 news release. "It's our goal to be part of a national dermatology practice that combines the best business principles and a deep commitment to excellence with the idea that patients should be the center of our universe. I'm excited about the future and our next steps. I'm very pleased to be an early member of a fast-growing national practice."

Besides North Carolina, DermOne locations were in Texas, Virginia and New Jersery, according to the company's website. The website also included notices to patients about services ceasing from offices in Texas and Virginia as well.

On Tuesday, Schweiger Dermatology Group announced that it has acquired nine New Jersey locations of DermOne Dermatology.
