Satellite ER Proposed For NHRMC

By Ken Little, posted Aug 19, 2013

A public hearing on a proposed project by New Hanover Regional Medical Center to open a satellite emergency department is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the New Hanover County library’s main branch, 201 Chestnut St.

In its proposal to state regulators, NHRMC also calls for moving one of its existing outpatient offices.

Hospital officials submitted the application June 14 to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, according to state records.

The request for the proposed $15 million emergency department was made to the state agency’s certificate of need section.

Pending approval, the project is expected to be complete by October 2015, according to a news release from the state.

NHRMC also seeks to relocate Porters Neck Imaging, an outpatient department of the hospital, to the new facility.

Erin Balzotti, NHRMC spokeswoman, said recently that plans include construction of a 30,000-square-foot medical facility in the Scotts Hill area in northern New Hanover County.

The facility would house 10 treatment rooms and one critical care room.

Novant Health receives 13 awards

VHA Central Atlantic recently recognized Winston-Salem-based Novant Health with 13 awards for excellence in clinical care.

Nine facilities, including Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, were honored for meeting or exceeding national performance standards and improving the patient experience.

The nine Novant Health hospitals were honored for improving patient care quality and safety in the areas of MRSA reduction and reduction of preventable heart failure readmissions and falls with injury.

Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center received special recognition for reporting a 50 percent or greater reduction in rate of falls with injury in calendar year 2012 compared to calendar year 2011. Novant Health’s Kernersville Medical Center and Thomasville Medical Center were also recognized for this improvement.

“It is the goal of our health system to ensure quality and safety in all that we do,” Dr. Stephen Wallenhaupt, Novant Health’s chief medical officer, said in a news release.

Shelbourn Stevens, president of Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, said he was proud of the accomplishments of the hospital’s physicians, nurses and staff.

“Their commitment to providing the highest quality of care to our patients is unmatched,” Stevens said.

NHRMC recognized nationally as ‘best hospital’

NHRMC recently received national recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of Best Hospitals.

It was named among the best hospitals in North Carolina and the Coastal Plain area, “indicating high proficiency in serving the needs of patients,” hospital officials said.

NHRMC was also recognized as high performing in cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopedics and pulmonology.

“The team of physicians, nurses and staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center work hard every day to deliver high quality patient care to everyone who comes to us,” Jack Barto, the hospital’s president and CEO, said in a news release.

The annual U.S. News Best Hospital rankings, now in their 24th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.

For the 2013-14 rankings, 147 of the approximately 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated were ranked in at least one specialty. The rankings are based on an extensive analysis that combines measures of performance in three primary dimensions of health care: structure, process and outcomes.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of. Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best,” Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor, said in the news release.

Women of Hope to host ‘Focused on You’ cancer support groups

The Women of Hope cancer support group has expanded its Focus on You Support Group services to Pender and Duplin counties.

The support groups are aimed at providing an emotionally safe space where women with cancer and their families can connect with others in the same situation.

Women of Hope uses education to empower women through early detection and continuing support throughout their treatment, officials said.

The Survivorship Support Group is for female cancer patients in any stage of treatment. The group includes women with impending surgery and those undergoing radiation and/or chemotherapy. The Caregiver Support Group is for anyone affected by a loved one’s cancer diagnosis. This group is both educational and encouraging in nature.

Both groups meet at the same time: 6:30-8 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at Friendly Community Baptist Church, 1730 U.S. Hwy. 117, Burgaw.

Groups are ongoing. Patients and their caregivers can start at any time and stay as long as needed.

Penelope Trammel facilitates the Duplin/West Pender Support Group. For more information, email [email protected].

Foundation announces endowment

The NHRMC Foundation recently announced the establishment of the Dan and Sheila Saklad Oncology Education Endowment, named in honor of a $100,000 gift from the Saklads.

Earnings from the endowment will support and enhance educational needs, including scholarships and continuing education stipends for

the nurses and staff at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and oncology services.

“The health care professionals that choose oncology as their specialty are truly unique and remarkable people. Thanks to the Saklads’ generosity, we will be able to continue to provide them with the training and ongoing education to be the best in their field so that future generations of patients with cancer will be able to receive the excellent care our community has come to expect from NHRMC and the Zimmer Cancer Center,” Aline Lasseter, vice president of development and executive director of the NHRMC Foundation, said in a news release.

The Saklads’ decision to fund the endowment was based on their own experience with NHRMC and the Zimmer Cancer Center after Sheila Saklad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in March 2012.

Dosher offers ‘enhanced dining’ experience

Patients of Dosher Memorial Hospital can now enjoy an enhanced dining experience during their hospital stay. Dosher recently implemented a “room service” style-dining program for its inpatients, officials of the Southport hospital said.

Dietary aides make daily visits to the hospital’s patient care unit and take orders.

“Our goal is to remove the typical hospital food reputation, and make it a truly great event,” Robert Vinesett, dietary director at Dosher Memorial Hospital, said in a news release.

The dietary needs of each patient are still followed, and all choices are acceptable for all patients’ calorie level.

Vinesett said the revamped dining experience has reduced wait time for patients who have just had tests or surgeries and are ready for a meal.
