Tournament Helps Fund Cardiac Technology

By Meredith Burns, posted Jun 19, 2012

The Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament raised more than $100,000 for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, which supports the hospital’s special programs and services.

This year’s tournament proceeds went to the NHRMC Heart Center to help fund the purchase of new technology that helps patients in cardiac arrest.

The golf tournament, which is in its 20th year, is organized by the NHRMC Foundation, a nonprofit organization and fundraising affiliate of NHRMC.

“Over the last 20 years, this tournament has made an impact on almost every area of New Hanover Regional Medical Center,” said Aline Lasseter, executive director of the NHRMC Foundation, in press release. “We are grateful to the community for once again coming together to support this life-saving technology.”

The Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine performs the functions of the heart and lungs on patients who have temporarily damaged these organs, allowing patients to rest and recover. The machine will draw blood from the body and return the blood to circulation after oxygen is added and carbon dioxide is removed.
