NHRMC Receives ‘Red Apple’ Designation

By Ken Little, posted Aug 31, 2010

It makes sense that hospital employees eat healthy.

The “Red Apple” program makes it easier for employees of New Hanover Regional Medical Center to do so.

The hospital system recently partnered with N.C. Prevention Partners’ Healthy Food Environments Initiative. The goal was to set an example of good nutrition for employees and patients. The Red Apple Program is funded by The Duke Endowment, in partnership with the N.C. Hospital Association.

Hospital officials said the Healthly Food Environments Initiative is a statewide project to help North Carolina hospitals make healthy foods more available, visible and affordable for patients, employees and visitors.

“I want us to continue [our] mission by helping our patients, visitors and employees make informed decisions about the foods they eat and how making good choices can positively impact their health,” said Jack Barto, hospital president and CEO, in a prepared statement.
