Greg White Receives Prestigious County Award

Greg White, Brunswick County’s coroner for more than 30 years, has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is given by the governor for exemplary service to the state of North Carolina and the community that is above and beyond the call of duty, according to the Governor’s Office. It is granted to residents who stand out in their communities and who have devoted their lives to serving others.

White served as Brunswick County’s coroner from 1985 until 2016, and during that time served as acting sheriff twice. As coroner, his office was responsible for responding to unattended deaths in Brunswick County. While assisting in the aftermath of those deaths, White and other employees in the office would also interact with and assist family members of the deceased, and the compassion shown in those situations was often mentioned and praised.

“The contribution Mr. White has made to this county can’t be understated,” said Brunswick County Board of Commissioners Vice Chair Marty Cooke in a news release. “He is in the truest sense a great public servant. I had the honor of initially serving with him on the rescue squad years ago and through the years I’ve seen his ongoing commitment and dedication to our citizens along with his expertise and professionalism in the discharge of his duties regardless of the time, day or weather. He has been a tremendous asset to all of us and I’m most grateful for his service to all of Brunswick County.”
