Wave Transit will not receive an additional $57,000 from New Hanover County, the board of commissioners voted Monday.

The Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority, which does business as Wave Transit, asked for funds from the county and other partners to bridge its operations for the remainder of the 2019-20 fiscal year, according to meeting documents and the request.

Commissioners voted Monday in a 3-2 vote to deny the request, with chairman Jonathan Barfield and commissioner Rob Zapple voting against the denial, said Jessica Loeper, the county's chief communications officer, in an email.

Commissioners Julia Olson-Boseman, Woody White and Pat Kusek voted to deny the request. At an October meeting, the same three commissioners voted to terminate the county's agreement with Wave Transit.

On Monday, commissioners discussed Wave Transit with research presented on ridership, funding, revenue, service costs and demand, stated an update on the measure on the county's Twitter feed.

The majority vote against the request was “based on a majority of Commissioners' concerns that WAVE's current strategy & finances are not sustainable," the update stated.

"We were disappointed that we were unable to provide the necessary information for the Commissioners to make a decision to allow a supplementary appropriation," stated Albert Eby, Wave's executive director, in an email Monday.

Wave Transit requested more than $326,000 in supplemental appropriations from its partners, an amount that includes the $57,000 from New Hanover County, according to a resolution passed by the authority in October. The requests were $250,000 from the city of Wilmington; $57,000 from New Hanover county; $5,500 from the Brunswick County; $9,500 from the town of Leland; $2,350 from the town of Navassa; and $1,800 from the town of Carolina Beach.
