Wilson Center Receives $10K To Support Dance Production

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Jun 16, 2021
The Wilson Center was recently awarded a $10,000 grant by the National Endowment for the Arts, according to a news release.

The Grants for Arts Projects funds will support a production and community dance residency of the Invertigo Dance Theatre during the 2022-23 season, officials said in the release.

Another local group, the Cucalorus Film Foundation, was also recently approved this month for a second Grants for Arts Projects award of $15,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Wilson Center project was one of 1,100 projects selected across the nation totaling $27 million selected in the second round of projects for funding this fiscal year.

“The arts, when partnered with education, have the power like no other to inspire young people and transform communities,” Shane Fernando, vice president of advancement and the arts for Cape Fear Community College, said in the release.

The Wilson Center will bring Invertigo Dance Theatre to perform “Formulae and Fairy Tales,” a repertory piece about the life of Alan Turing, a mathematician and World War II codebreaker, stated the release.

Residency activities include a host of community events in Wilmington such as arts and science programs, dance workshops and classes with students from CFCC and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, stated the release.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to imagine returning to a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce funding that will help arts organizations such as the Wilson Center to reengage fully with partners and audiences,” said National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chair Ann Eilers in the release. “Although the arts have sustained many during the pandemic, the chance to gather with one another and share arts experiences is its own necessity and pleasure.”
