Halloween Likely To Film In Wilmington, Mayor Says

By Cece Nunn and Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Jul 18, 2019
While still awaiting an official announcement, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said Thursday that the Port City may be the location of the next Halloween film.

At the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association event at The Terraces on Sir Tyler, Saffo mentioned the film when asked about whether the film industry is coming back to the city.

"So, the good news is – we lost Swamp Thing – but we're bringing in Halloween …,” Saffo said to a crowd of about 130 people.

Rumors of a sequel to the 2018 feature film released Oct. 19, which was directed by David Gordon Green and starred Jamie Lee Curtis, have been floating around on Keep NC Film's Facebook page.

According to IMDB, the 2018 horror film had locations in Charleston, South Carolina.

Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission, said Thursday he could not comment.

Much of what has been filming in Wilmington recently has been TV series.

“Television has been our bread and butter since the last major feature film, which was in 2014,” Griffin said earlier this week.

Reprisal, a show set to stream on Hulu, is currently filming in the Wilmington area. And Swamp Thing, which has aired on DC Universe, was also shot in in the city. The production, however, will not be picked up for another season, officials said in June.

Two other projects have also filmed in the area in the past couple of years.

Uncle Frank, a smaller independent film, wrapped shooting this year, Griffin said. Words on Bathroom Walls, another independent film, concluded its filming last spring.

The Halloween sequel could be the next feature film project.

"I know that they are looking at us. I know it's close; I don't know that they've signed a deal as of yet, but I'm almost certain we will get them," Saffo said.

No official announcement about the project has taken place, he said.
