EmergeOrtho recently announced the addition of two board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians to its team.
Ruth Anderson and Scott Playford, have joined the medical staff in the New Hanover and Onslow county offices, according to a press release.
Anderson, board certified in pain management and anesthesiology, is working out of EmergeOrtho locations in Wilmington, Porters Neck and Jacksonville. She brings more than three decades of experience and a unique approach to the field of health and wellness to the team.
Anderson earned her bachelor of science degree in rehabilitation education and her master of
science in physical education/exercise specialist from Pennsylvania State University. After earning
her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, she completed an internship
in internal medicine at St. Paul Medical Center, as well as residencies in anesthesiology at Parkland
Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas and Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.
She completed her fellowship in pain management the University of Chicago.
Anderson has special interests in weight loss, nutrition, exercise and aging, and has published
numerous articles on the topics. She is also the author of
GET MOVING! Live Better Live Longer, a
self-help book presenting individualized exercise prescriptions to fight the six leading causes of death and
disability in the country, according to the release.
Playford is board-certified in family medicine, fellowship-trained with a certificate of added qualifications in sports medicine, and designated as a concussion management consultant, officials stated in the release. He was also a physician in the Navy.
A native of Anderson, South Carolina, Playford (
left) is a graduate of the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina.
Playford completed his family medicine internship and residency at Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson, and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He has also earned a master of business administration at East Carolina University.
At EmergeOrtho’s Jacksonville office, Playford is treating patients of all ages for sports, overuse and
work injuries, including but not limited to the back, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. He is also designated as a Credentialed ImPACT Consultant for concussion care, one of 14 CIC providers in North Carolina and the only CIC physician east of I-95, according to the release.
Playford is also known for his expertise in the athletic community. He is an active leader in local athletics as a member of the N.C. Boxing Commission and the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission, serving as a physician for USA Boxing, as well as a consultant and team physician with Onslow County Schools.
EmergeOrtho is part of an alliance of four practices in North Carolina with 49 offices in 21 counties in North Carolina.
