UNCW Ranks Among Top 100 Public National Universities

By Staff Reports, posted Sep 14, 2020
The University of North Carolina Wilmington was ranked No. 95 on U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 Public National Universities list for 2021, according to a news release.

UNCW was one of three UNC System schools among the Top 100 Public National Universities for 2021, according to a new list of Best Colleges 2021 from U.S. News & World Report, stated the release.

This is the second year that UNCW has made the publication’s top 100 list of national public universities.

“This ranking, which is based on the 2019-20 academic year, is a testament to UNCW’s commitment to excellence as well its resilience, even when faced with an upheaval like the coronavirus pandemic,” said UNCW Chancellor Jose Sartarelli in the release.

The university tied for the No. 95 spot on the Top 100 Public National Universities list with Florida International University, Oklahoma State University, Rowan University and the University of New Mexico, according to the release.

U.S. News also ranked UNCW on other lists for 2021, including  Best Colleges for Veterans (tied for No. 136); Best Value Schools (No. 179); Best Overall (tied for No. 187) and Best Business Programs Overall (tied for No. 235).

U.S. News reviewed 1,452 U.S. bachelor's degree-granting institutions based on 17 measures of academic quality, stated the release. Those include "graduation and retention rates; faculty resources; undergraduate academic reputation; selectivity; and social mobility," officials said.

UNCW welcomed 17,915 students for the fall semester, including a record 3,265 total graduate students, stated the release.

UNCW also was named a Best Southeastern School among 142 colleges that made the list of 2021 Best Colleges: Region by Region by The Princeton Review, which does not rank the colleges and universities, and is also on the publication’s list of Green Colleges, stated the release.

UNCW has made a $400 million investment in capital improvements, stated the release. The university also continues to expand its programs and services "to address issues of local, regional and global significance," officials said in the release.
