At its Aug. 22 meeting in Chapel Hill, the board of trustees of University of North Carolina Wilmington elected new officers for the 2014-15 academic year. The election results were announced Monday in a news release.
The new board chairman is Michael Shivar, a resident of Kinston and owner of Kinston Insurance Service Agency. Shivar previously chaired the board’s external affairs committee and was a member of the educational planning and programs and executive committees. His board term expires in 2017. He is a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Shivar and his wife, Jackie, established a creative writing scholarship endowment at UNCW named for their daughter Ashley, who earned a bachelor’s (’07) and a master’s (’10) degree in creative writing at the university.
“I am honored to serve as chair of the UNCW Board of Trustees,” Shivar said in the release. “The university is among the best in our region, and I’m proud to be the parent of a graduate. I look forward to supporting faculty and staff as they advance UNCW’s mission to educate students, conduct research, pursue innovation and improve the quality of life in southeastern North Carolina.”
The vice chairman is H. Carlton Fisher ’83 of Wilmington, the release stated. Fisher owns and manages Coastal Realty, a local commercial real estate firm founded by his father. He has served on and chaired the UNCW Foundation board. His board term expires in 2015.
Seahawks abound in the Fisher family. Carlton Fisher’s wife, Julie Elkins Fisher, is a 1983 graduate, and their son, Mason, is a current junior. His parents, Herb and Sylvia Fisher, attended Wilmington College.
Carlton and Julie Fisher’s daughter, Anna, has deviated from tradition. She is a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Wilmington resident and community leader Wilma W. Daniels was re-elected as secretary of the board. She is a member of the board’s business affairs, educational planning and programs and executive committees. Her board term expires in 2015.
Founder and CEO of Daniels Development LLC, she also is the founder of and property manager for William Hooper Apartments. Daniels’ late husband, Windell, also served on the UNCW board of trustees. Her son Euran S. Daniels funded a scholarship endowment at UNCW and serves on the university’s board of visitors.
