Miller Supporters Take To Facebook

By Jenny Callison, posted May 13, 2014
Supporters of University of North Carolina Wilmington chancellor Gary Miller who want to see him continue in his leadership post have taken their campaign to Facebook.

“We want to focus on the great job Chancellor Miller has done at the start of what will hopefully be a long tenure leading UNCW,” begins a post by the originators of Keep UNCW Chancellor Gary Miller Facebook page, which appears to have been launched soon after UNCW commencement exercises this past weekend.

“Many parents, alumni, students and friends of UNCW in the Wilmington area enjoyed Mother's Day and UNCW Graduation festivities this weekend. It led many of us to decide to fight back and retain Chancellor Gary Miller at UNCW. We love UNCW and support Chancellor Miller!” reads another message, posted Monday.

The campaign is responding to reports that Miller is seeking top posts at three other universities. After being one of three finalists for the position of president at Youngstown State University in Ohio, he was not selected for the position, but he apparently remains a finalist for president of SUNY-Buffalo State and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Other posts by the campaign note UNCW’s four-year graduation rate as being the second-highest among universities in the UNC system. Still others mention the university’s stand against the UNCW chapter of SAE fraternity, which was suspended because of hazing-related drinking incidents.

“Gary Miller has been a bright light in the region, demonstrating vision and leadership that have been lacking and sorely needed,” stated Wilmington business owner Lloyd Smith in a comment to the site on Monday. “We need his [sic] not just at UNCW but as a leader in the region. I was surprised at the news that such an issue could blow up in this way, but it is obviously time for the community to step up in support of Chancellor Miller! Share this and ask your friends to speak out.”

In another message, local entrepreneur Tom Looney stated, “I strongly support efforts to RETAIN CHANCELLOR GARY MILLER AT UNCW! My family includes a rising 4th year student at UNCW; a member of the Board of Visitors; and my own various connections and touch points over the years---most lately, with the UNCW Center For Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). Let's cleanse the political hacks off the Board of Trustees, and keep Gary Miller as Chancellor!”
