Several New Hanover County employees recently earned distinctions connected with their professional responsibilities

Teresa Smith, an administrative support specialist within the New Hanover County Emergency Management Department, was recognized by N.C. Emergency Management and “joins an elite group of emergency professionals,” according to a news release from the department.

Smith was recently approved by the N.C. Emergency Management Certification Committee to receive the state’s Executive Emergency Manager certification. The Executive Emergency Manager designation is the highest honor of professional achievement available from the N.C. Emergency Management certification program, the release stated.

“Teresa has worked diligently over the past seven years to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete this intensive certification program,” Warren Lee, director of New Hanover County emergency management and 911 services, said in the release.  “I commend her for her dedication and service to the citizens of New Hanover County and to North Carolina Emergency Management.”

The certification process included a management essay and written examination. To maintain the certification, recipients must submit additional training and contributions to the profession every five years.

Smith has served New Hanover County Emergency Management Department since the spring of 2007, the release stated.

BeasleyNew Hanover County register of deeds Tammy Beasley (at left), along with register of deeds assistants Kimberly Phillips, Micah Phelps, Theresa Davis (shown below) and Andrea Creswell, have completed North Carolina’s School of Government Advanced Register of Deeds School, located in Chapel Hill.

Advanced ROD certification requires an additional 32 hours of specialized training in North Carolina Law, General Statues and Managerial Protocols and Procedures, according to the county’s news release.

“Education is a critical component in serving the citizens of New Hanover County and I am very proud to have staff that share the county’s initiatives and align with the shared values of professionalism, integrity, innovation, stewardship and accountability,” Beasley said in the release.

The Register of Deeds assists the public with records of birth, death, marriage, notary, assumed names and real estate transactions.
